Valve broke your Steam Skin

Posted by Sebastian · 10/12/05 @10:38 pm · community · 12 comments
As we mentioned earlier today, the new changes to Steam have caused all Steam skins to become useless, they will not work under the new Steam UI. This means any skins you've created must be rewritten. This is the official statement we've received from Valve after we asked about providing some sort of legacy compatibility:
The new UI uses a radically different VGUI2 engine, there is no reasonable way to be backwards compatible. The skins will need to be re-written (and re-tooled) to work with the new (much more flexible and powerful) format.
Personally, I do not like this new interface - too much bloat for my taste, and on top of all that when you sign-in you get this big window with some Ragdoll Kung Fu thing in your face,. Call me old fashion, but simplicity works for me. Usually, I am not the one to complain, but since we have close to 800 Steam skins this means that we'll have to move many things around so new Steam skins aren't mixed with the Steam skins Valve has turned into garbage.

Sorry to those that put countless hours into their skin. You can either contact Valve and ask for legacy Steam skin support (asking probably won't work anyway), sit down and deal with it, or start creating new Steam Skins. You decide.

list Steam Community
Everyone at Valve extends a big welcome to those of you who joined the Steam Community this week. In just four days, more than 65,000 people created a profile and more than 10,000 groups staked a claim (the largest boasting 1,000 members). Thousands of events, from tournaments to LAN parties, have been scheduled. Needless to say, the Community is thriving.

list The End May Be Near...
KoshVorlon Edit ..... Everything is fine, the site is not going anyplace. There was an issue with Apache that took it to 100%, the monitoring system did not send an e-mail alert of the issue. Sebastian is off on Holiday and I was away for the day. When I checked on the site, the next day, I saw the issue and immediately logged into the server and corrected it. Now we just have to make a change in the monitoring software to make sure we get alerted if this should ever happen again.

list Game Devs kicks VIP Mod up a notch
A strong presence of game developers working along side with the modding community is nothing new to Counter-Strike., Turtle Rock Studios along with Valve, have offered their assistance with the development of VIP Mod (preview). Matt Campbell from Turtle Rock Studios will be offering help with some code to help identify the VIP when in-game, something the VIP Mod lacked previously. While it was the down-side of the mod, it will certainly bring a new meaning to the VIP Mod. Check out the VIP
