Exclamation Counter-Strike 1.6 FPS Problems
I am not n00b to online gaming, but have been playing Counter-Strike since last year. I used to run a GeForce 2 MX 440 w/32Mb and used to get an awesome frame rate (99fps solid). Ever since steam was released my frames have dropped fairly bad, instead of getting 99fps flat like I used to, I am getting somewhere near 50-65 frames, which is really annoying for me. I have just gone out and baught a new video card... (GeForce FX 5600 256Mb DDR [AGP/DVI/myVIVO]) and still have the same problem, but my frames hover the slightest bit higher... (around: 60 - 70fps) the engine speed increase of the new card has only gained me about 10fps and this is fairly depressing.

I use the following system...

AMD Athlon XP + 1600
MSI K7T266PRO Mainboard
256Mb DDR Kingston @ 333MHz
GeForce FX 5600 256Mb DDR [AGP/DVI/myVIVO]
17" ViewSonic Monitor
60Gb Seagate HDD (File System: NTFS)

My computer seems quite sufficient to play the game, as it states on the website that the minimal requirements are... (Copy and Pasted from Site)

http://www.steampowered.com/index.p...915607,55908800

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
64Mb RAM
400MHz Processor
1Gb of Hard Disk Space

It is also recommended that Steam be installed on a hard disk formatted using NTFS. Fat32 drives will work, but performance will be slower.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see my pc specs are way more than sufficient to play counter-strike, before anyone says something like, ... "These are the MINIMAL system requirements to play, and doesnt mean that you are going to have the sickest frame-rate" (Which I am Aware), hear me out.

When I first installed steam onto my box, I was getting like 120fps or around that flickering away which puzzled me because I have never seen the FPS Counter go about 99fps. Their was an update which came out shortly after that and my 120fps was gone. (

Now, whenever I have more than 2 players in View or a smoke nade, my fps drops faster than the buttons on a fat bitched clothes to around (40 - 60fps).

This is really depressing, and I would like all the help that I could possibly get, so If anyone could help me with this problem it would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys, Look forward to hearing from you...

i have the gforce 440mx 128mb card and i can keep my frames at 99 using the following settings. what resolution are you playing CS in? What is the smoke nade quality setting?

as far as the video settings go, here's what i've got

Performance and Quality tab:
Image setting: set on performance, not high performance but not quality
AA settings: check application-controlled
anisotropic filtering: check application controlled

OGL settings:
vsync- on
bufer- auto
default color- use desktop default

monitor settings, should be the max Hertz that your monitor can handle
it helps if you run the same resolution on your desktop that you use in CS

i use 1024x768x32, i have all of your settings besides vsync, due to vsync limiting frames to 60 - 59

I always thought that v-sync caused problems within cs. I am new to steam so I will try your settings with v-sync on! Thanks for the advise though fellas!

your internet connection has packet loss. call your ISP and tell them about it.

cl_flush_entry_packet means you have packetloss, (loss of incoming and outgoing data). just tell your isp and they should know what your talking about.

yeah 99fps on a geforce2 mx?
no way that is possible you must have been seeing things because i once possesed the very same card you had and no way did i even get close to 99 frames and this was in 1.3 days so...... your on crack. now with your new card 60-70 is sufficient enough to rape anyone however if you go into your video cards properties and turn of vertical sync you will get better frames in tighter areas and not so much in bigger areas but i will garuntee you that you will see 99 fps in most areas

HmMmmmMmmmMMm
Sup ive been playing cs since 1.3

system specs
DELL Inspirion 5100 (Laptop)
640 DDR PC 2100
Radeon 7500 Mobility
P4 2.4 ghz
XP

As you can see my system is clearly good enough for steam.

I had troubles with my frames too so I after tons of research I got this.

Type these commands in your council for 120 + frames some ppl have gotten 400 fps doing this that I know of. I however got 120 steady 110.

V sync OFF!!! this will lag most systems down.
Download your latest video drivers and try to improve your refresh rate in the card settings.
Type in council
developer 1
fps_max 999
net_graph 3
Oh btw use Open GL and try a smaller game resolution.

Well GL and GG

For the person that start this thread...the two big issues are the memory and cpu. You should have updated those first because cs is not very taxing on the video card. The reason you are still getting weak fps is because your new video card is bottled necked by your memory and cpu. First try adding another stick of memory, its really cheap if you go to www.pricewatch.com and look around. Now if you have the bucks upgrade your cpu and that will deffintly help your problems. If you dont have the cash try turning programs and process off in the background also try editing some stuff in cs and see how that goes.

check my setup out
look at my setup:

Shuttle An-35[N] 400 ULTRA mobo
AMD ATHLON XP 2000+ Oc'ed to 2600+ at 333mhz
512 MB PC3200 DDR400 RAM (OCZ)
PNY Technologies GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB w/s-vid, crt, and dvi outs
30 GIG 7200 RPM HDD on NTFS

the video card is over clocked from stock settings of 250/526
thats Core/Memory clocks. I oc'ed it to 300/600. And i get constant 100 fps.. no problem even in smoke. The MX series cards have slower clocks but they should be getting the frames you described. Also the only good FX cards are the FX ultra cards, dont waste money on a regular 5200, 5600, or 5700.. get the ultra versions, and you wont be disapointed.

The only thing that i can understand is that the 64 mb version of my card runs alot faster than the 128 mb version. For you nVidia card users, i recommend downloading COOLBITS reg file so you can set yoru clock settings, works wonders for me.

Not to mention perfect graphics on:
Need For Speed Underground
warcraft3
Day of Defeat
Call of Duty
BattleField 1942

and more.

DUde right click on desktop go to settings, advanced,if your not then use open gl in cs, after you click on advanced find the nvidia video card tab and click on open gl setting. turn vertical sync to allways off . go into cs in consel ,change developer to 1, and change fps_max to 400
